2018 Chevrolet Traverse High Country and RS


We drive a lot. And we drive a lot of different vehicles. From the smallest SUVs to the largest pickups, it’s our duty to stay informed of all the latest happenings in the automotive industry so we can provide honest feedback to you, our loyal readers. This often means flying to remote locations to spend half a day piloting some vehicle along a predestinated route that, if we’re lucky, is 100 miles long. We bring this up not to belittle the typical drive program. Instead we were pleasantly surprised when Chevrolet called and offered its new ’18 Traverse to us for a four-day weekend in Michigan—and let us bring the family along.

What followed was an 800-mile adventure that took us through and across congested urban streets, wide-open country highways, dirt backwoods trails, and epic sand dunes. With no predefined drive route and all day to arrive at our hotel accommodations, we set off from downtown Detroit bright and early. With three people packing into the Traverse and one of them being less than three years old, we had a good deal of luggage along for the journey. Thankfully, with the third row of seats folded down, the Traverse sports a healthy 58.1 cubic feet of cargo volume, enough for our bags with plenty of room to spare.

Heading west toward Grand Rapids, we quickly settled into a comfortable groove. The ’18 Traverse’s wheelbase has been stretched 2 inches, to 120.9. This is notable because it’s just 10 inches fewer than that of Suburban. In addition to the added length, the Traverse is also quite a bit lighter than the outgoing model, 360 pounds to be exact. Combining these updates with the magic that GM’s chassis engineers performed, yielded a highway cruiser that was impressively comfortable while remaining fun to drive.

Turning north out of the city, we headed down the tree-lined byways of western Michigan. When not using the Traverse’s adaptive cruise control, we were impressed by the smoothness and power produced by the 3.6L V-6 engine. With 310 hp and 266 lb-ft of torque on tap, merging was never an issue, and the Hydra-Matic 9T65 nine-speed automatic transmission seemed to always be in the correct gear for the situation.

For ’18, Chevy added two new trim levels: the sporty RS and ultra-lux High Country (we were driving the latter). High Country features unique interior trim and special Loft Brown leather with suede microfiber accents, a power third row, with all of the safety and technology features standard. High Country badging, 20-inch polished wheels, and D-Optic headlamps adorn the exterior. We especially enjoyed the Surround Vision camera system and rear camera mirror, which we used nearly the entire time and grew to absolutely love after a quick learning curve.

Since the High Country we were testing was outfitted with the company’s twin-clutch all-wheel drive and new Traction Mode Select system, we ventured off the paved path and hit Michigan’s famous coastal sand dunes for a quick romp among the Jeeps and buggies. With a bit of smart driving, we were able to easily pilot the Traverse up, down, along, and over the dunes. Folks driving their lifted wheelers were taken back when our factory SUV passed right by their stuck buddies.

With sun setting, we again turned north and finished our journey by overnighting in the resort town of Traverse City, pun fully intended. We finished out the trip a day later by returning to where we started, the metropolis of Detroit, completing 800 miles and averaging just over 19 mpg.

In the end, we were sad to leave the ’18 Traverse and our epic adventure behind and return to reality. The vehicle impressed in every way and at every turn, and with so many hours logged behind the wheel, we certainly had time to shake out any gremlins that might be lurking. If nothing else, the Traverse is a great vehicle for making memories, and isn’t that really all life’s about anyway?

Depending on your perspective, the ’18 Chevrolet Traverse RS could either be the star performer or the black sheep of the Traverse family. While the rest of the range deploys a 310hp V-6, the RS uses a turbocharged 2.0L four-cylinder unit to deliver 257 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque.

Fuel consumption on the highway is 26 mpg, compared with 27 mpg from the V-6. The turbo engine works most efficiently on premium gas, while the V-6 is happy on regular. Towing capacity is 1,500 pounds, as opposed to 5,000 pounds with the V-6. And the RS comes solely with front-wheel drive, whereas its Traverse compadres with the bigger engine offer the option of all-wheel drive.

It’s as a complete package, though, that the RS comes into sharper focus. Standard equipment is generous, including 20-inch alloy wheels, black leather seating surfaces, tri-zone automatic climate control, powered tailgate, Bose 10-speaker audio system, navigation, 4G-LTE Wi-Fi, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto smartphone integration, heated front seats, and several advanced safety features like blind-spot monitoring.

It also sports some cosmetic additions to differentiate it from the rest of the range, such as a blacked-out grille, black-finished wheels, Bow Tie badge, and other accents.

Although this engine is shorter on horsepower, it does have 29 lb-ft more torque. And torque is really what matters when trying to move off the line or speed up to join a freeway. Ninety percent of this surge comes in at 2,100 rpm. Driving around the city and suburbs or at usual freeway speeds, it always feels like there’s some extra push just waiting for a flex of the right foot. In fairness, compared with the V-6, the 2.0L unit does have better fuel consumption in the city (20 mpg against 18 mpg) and is 1 mpg less thirsty overall, with a combined rating of 22 mpg.

The Traverse RS is one of those “no thinking required” purchases. For the soccer parent doing the school run who wants an extremely well-equipped crossover with punch and panache but no fretting over an options list, this is it. Well, as long as paying $43,095 doesn’t require a whole lot of consideration.

Chevrolet reckons this might be the case with many people. It has carried out some research and found that buyers are often ready and willing to pay extra before reaching the level of the premium brands like Lexus and Mercedes-Benz. But the company never really had anything along those lines to offer until now. The Traverse RS represents Chevy’s upward expansion and ambitions.
