2016 Subaru Isle of Man lap record in an WRX STI by Prodrive
Subaru went to this year’s Isle of Man TT to challenge a record it already held: The fastest lap around the island in on four wheels. Unlike the previous record-setting time attack laps, which used a nearly stock WRX STI, Subaru brought a specially prepped race-ready WRX STI to the island this time around. Behind the wheel of the Prodrive-built Subie, Mark Higgins managed the course in only 17.35 — or nearly two minutes faster than the previous record of 19.26.
With 550 hp, it’s no real surprise that he beat the previous record, but shaving two minutes off the 37.7-mile course -– safely –- is damn impressive anyway.
“It was an amazing run today considering we were running in very hot conditions and the tarmac was quite soft. With lower temperatures, we would be making more horsepower, so I still believe we have more left in terms of speed, but it is great to have another record in the bank,” said Mark Higgins.
Higgins’ current average lap speed 128.73 mph, or just 4 mph slower than the TT’s fastest motorcycle lap. With apparently more power on tap if the conditions are right, we expect that difference to shrink if Subaru decides to make another lap of the dangerous track.
