2016 GMC Sierra 1500 All Terrain X drive review with photos, specs and pricing

Solid bones here with the Sierra 1500 that we’ve driven countless times before. Everything inside is pretty much sorted, and the 5.3-liter and eight-speed trans work well together. The big change here is the All-Terrain X package, which will set you back about four grand.

The package adds the 18-inch black painted wheels, Goodyear Duratrac tires, black outside mirrors, body-color side molding, body-color door handles, full LED headlamps, all-weather floor liner, black sport side steps, sport bar and performance exhaust … and it looks boss.

The sport bar over the bed is the coolest part. It makes the pickup look and feel smaller than it really is. I didn’t use the deer-shinin’ flood lights, but I’m sure they’re bright. I did throw my tools in the bed after installing the dang Jeep soft top and was angry when the locking tailgate was locked, and I didn’t have the keys. The bed walls are pretty far off the ground, and my toolbox weighs about 100 pounds. When the doors are unlocked, it unlocks.

Other than that, I love the triple-black look, the meaty tires look great and the AC was super cold on a 90-degree day. I did, however, take my personal Mustang out to dinner instead of it, so it doesn’t quite tap into the fun part of driving, at least on paved roads. It’d probably be really fun on some two-tracks though, at night, in the rain.

There’s something to be said for trucks with light bars hovering above the bed. While that may be due to the fact that I fell in love with the all-black Toyota Tacoma from “Back to the Future” at an early age, the light-bar aspect manages to inject a sporty look to this rig.

In terms of light-duty full-size pickups, GMC and Chevy might be leading the pack in my book. The 5.3-liter V8 rumbles enough to excite you and makes enough power to at least get the truck out of its own way. The eight-speed transmission is smooth and works well. We’ll see what happens when it’s replaced with the upcoming 10-speed.

The only major difference with this GMC Sierra All-Terrain X and the base-spec Sierra are the $4,315 All-Terrain X, and the $2,105 All-Terrain packages. Sure, it might seem strange to break up two similarly named packages, but they add different things. While the All-Terrain X’s price might make for a tough sell, considering it’s mostly ornamental, the cheaper All-Terrain package is nearly a must. That package nets you the eight-speed automatic, heavier duty shocks and spray-in bed liner — things you’ll find helpful for actual truck use.

Still, I’d find a way to spring for the All-Terrain X package and live your ’80s cool-truck-guy dreams. Heck, maybe even throw some Hella lights on the bar for added flavor.
